Using white rice-flour and
red-clay paints with crude brushes, rags, or their fingers, the artists
paint geometric patterns, floral designs, and animal and human figures
on the earth-colored mud/dung walls. These painted prayers,
written from the heart, are a way of communicating with the gods, and
are most often dedicated to Lakshmi, the pan-Indian goddess of
abundance, fertility, prosperity, and protection of the home.
